Ruben Amorim hit out at his Manchester United side for being “too comfortable” after they surrendered a winning position in a 3-3 draw against Tottenham.
United led for much of the game thanks to Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half strike, but were pegged back as Mathys Tel and Richarlison turned the match on its head before Matthijs de Ligt salvaged a point with a 96th-minute header.
Despite extending their unbeaten run to five games, Amorim was frustrated by his team’s complacency.
“We have a lot of problems; we’re just at the beginning,” he said. “Sometimes results make it look like we’re improving — and we are — but there’s still a lot to do. We were comfortable in the game, but we should have been more aggressive. The three points were there for the taking.”
The United manager warned his players that they need to maintain focus for 90 minutes.
“We need to expect that in one play, everything can change. That’s what happened today. We have to do better because the game was there to win.”
Amorim also expressed concern over a potential knee injury to substitute Benjamin Sesko, saying the club would assess him further.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank defended his own substitutions after some fans booed the decision to replace Xavi Simons with Tel — who went on to score the equaliser.
“Sometimes you’re lucky,” Frank said. “But every substitution I make is to try to win the game. [Tel] did well and took his chance.”
Despite failing to win at home since 16 August, Frank insisted his side are “moving in the right direction” after pushing United to the brink.
