Australian authorities have launched what is being described as the country’s biggest tactical policing effort following the killing of two police officers during a routine warrant execution in Victoria’s alpine region. The tragedy unfolded on August 26, 2025, when officers arrived at a rural property near Porepunkah. According to investigators, the suspect, Dezi Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, opened fire on the team. Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, 35, were fatally wounded, while another officer sustained serious injuries. Freeman escaped on foot into surrounding bushland.
Police commanders say the manhunt surpasses anything seen in the nation before. More than 125 highly trained officers, including reinforcements from interstate and New Zealand, have been deployed. The terrain is proving treacherous, with search teams navigating caves, rivers, cliffs, and dense forest. Authorities have also scoured abandoned shacks and mineshafts, leaving no corner unchecked. Investigators have not confirmed any sightings of Freeman since the day of the attack. Police are weighing several possibilities, including that he is hiding in the alpine wilderness, has been aided by others, or may not have survived. Officials continue to warn that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.
