Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has said Spurs are not close to spending £100m on a single player, unlike rivals Arsenal, despite recent changes in the club’s leadership and increased financial backing.
Spurs have undergone significant restructuring since Daniel Levy’s removal as chair and the installation of a new leadership team by the Lewis family. While the club is aiming to grow its business and achieve greater success on the pitch, Frank believes they are still some way off matching Arsenal’s willingness to make nine-figure signings, such as the £105m deal for Declan Rice in 2023. Tottenham’s current record signing remains Richarlison, who joined for £60m in 2022.
Frank questioned whether his predecessor Ange Postecoglou was right to suggest Spurs would never spend £100m on one player, saying such a move could be possible in the long term but not anytime soon. He stressed the importance of patience, process and smart investment rather than extravagant spending.
Rather than relying on blockbuster transfers, Frank said Tottenham’s focus is on developing existing players and investing in the right profiles. He pointed to the importance of signing players at the right age and stage of development, using Rice as an example of a well-timed, high-value signing.
Tottenham recently received £100m in funding from the Lewis family, with further financial support expected. Frank said he has been assured the ownership is fully committed to the club’s long-term success and is confident the board will back him as he looks to build a competitive team.
