De Niro Speaks Out Against Trump
Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro voiced strong criticism of Donald Trump, warning that the president “will never leave” office without action from the American people. Appearing on MS NOW, De Niro urged citizens to take responsibility for holding Trump accountable, citing the president’s remarks about potentially nationalizing elections as a serious concern.
Following this, the actor attended a counter-event called State of the Swamp at the National Press Club, where he condemned what he described as a government run by “dishonest, greedy, and cruel authoritarians,” saying he felt “betrayed by my country” and emphasizing a need to return to the nation’s foundational values.
Trump Responds With Social Media Attacks
Trump responded angrily on Truth Social, targeting not only De Niro but also Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, calling for them to be “deported” despite their American citizenship.
In his post, Trump described De Niro as “deranged” and accused him of actions that were “seriously criminal.” He also compared the actor unfavorably to Rosie O’Donnell, reiterating a prior threat to challenge her citizenship—an action prohibited by Supreme Court precedent.
Public Opinion and Polling Insights
Polling ahead of the State of the Union highlights widespread concern about Trump’s leadership. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found 61 percent of Americans believe the president has become erratic with age, including nearly nine in ten Democrats and a majority of independents. Another poll by Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos showed only 39 percent approval for Trump’s job performance.
Broader questions about political leadership also emerged, with 79 percent of respondents agreeing that elected officials in Washington are too old to represent most Americans. Currently, the average age in the Senate is 64 and 58 in the House of Representatives. White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed these results as “fake and desperate narratives,” but the controversy underscores the growing tension between Trump and high-profile critics.
