Tesla Faces Declining Demand
Tesla experienced a sharp decline in European sales in July, with registrations falling 40% year on year. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported that the company registered 8,837 vehicles across the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association, down from 14,769 in July 2024. Even the refreshed Model Y has not been able to halt the slowdown.
BYD Accelerates Growth
BYD’s sales surged to 13,503 units last month, more than triple the 4,151 recorded a year earlier. Its market share climbed to 1.2%, ahead of Tesla’s 0.8%. The Chinese automaker, known for competitively priced models, has expanded rapidly across Europe and earlier this year surpassed Tesla in sales for the first time, according to JATO Dynamics.
UK Incentives and Regional Market Trends
The UK government has introduced new financial incentives to support the uptake of electric vehicles. Ford will be the first company to receive the full £3,750 grant on two models, while 26 additional vehicles qualify for £1,500 subsidies. The incentives apply to cars priced below £37,000, with discounts applied at the point of sale. UK car production rose 5.6% in July, marking a second consecutive month of growth. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders warned that the sector still faces uncertainty due to weak consumer confidence and fluctuating trade flows. Across Europe, 1.011 million battery-electric vehicles were registered in the first seven months of 2025, representing 15.6% of the market, while hybrids continued to dominate with 2.255 million units, driven by strong gains in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
