George Russell produced a stunning lap to claim pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, outpacing Max Verstappen by almost two-tenths of a second and giving Mercedes a major boost in their title push.
While Russell celebrated one of the best qualifying performances of his career, Verstappen was left frustrated. The world champion abandoned his final flying lap, gesturing in anger at Lando Norris, who he claimed had obstructed him on the Marina Bay street circuit. “That is what happens when there is a car in front of you and that will be remembered,” Verstappen said, accusing Norris of costing him vital downforce in the closing corners.
Norris, who was on an in-lap and not under investigation, dismissed the complaints. “They always complain, that’s Red Bull,” he said. “I didn’t even know, I was like three seconds ahead.”
Whether Verstappen could have matched Russell remains debatable. He had already been off the Briton’s pace on his first run, while Russell improved again on his second attempt to seal pole with clinical precision. The 27-year-old, still recovering from illness and under contract speculation at Mercedes, delivered a timely reminder of his quality.
Behind them, Oscar Piastri qualified third, keeping his 25-point title lead intact over teammate Norris, who settled for fifth. Kimi Antonelli impressed in fourth, while Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc lined up sixth and seventh.
Post-qualifying drama saw both Williams cars disqualified after their DRS slots were found to have exceeded parameters, dropping Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant to the back.
McLaren remain on the brink of clinching the constructors’ championship, needing only 13 points on Sunday to seal back-to-back titles. But the battle at the front will pit Russell against Verstappen in a tense fight for supremacy at a circuit where neither has yet claimed victory.
